“Don’t knock masturbation, it’s sex with someone I love.” –Woody Allen
It’s the most common question amongst penis exercising beginners – does masturbation before or after a penis workout effect penis growth?
As a bodybuilder, I can tell you that athletes have also have been debating this question for years. Many believe that masturbation or sex before a competition will help performance, while others believe neither should be done after or even abstained completely.
Masturbation, Sex or Ejaculation?
Initially, this article was intended to talk about the effects of masturbation on penis size and penis enlargement. As I outlined the main ideas I realized that it shouldn’t be only about masturbation, since the hormonal/physiological effects of ejaculation are almost exactly the same regardless if it’s caused by yourself or a partner.
At a biochemical level, the same changes occur in our bodies after masturbation and sex.
Nonetheless, sex is more intense than masturbation. Intercourse orgasms release four times more prolactin than masturbatory orgasms.
Don’t Believe the Myths
“Not so long ago, even a harmless activity like masturbation was regarded by the medical community as the first step on the road to madness,” said Dr. Steven Lamm.
There are many myths around masturbation; like going blind, hair growing in your palm, and losing the ability to have children. These myths are just that – old wives tales, steep in old world religious beliefs.
The Healthy Side of Sex & Masturbation
While there are no general indicators of ill health associated with masturbation, it can be powerfully positive or negative for many individuals.
Research has indicated that, contrary to traditional beliefs, masturbation (and sex) can be good for your sexual health. The reasoning here? Frequent erections are a light form of exercise, as every time you get an erection the penis muscle (smooth muscle, that is) relaxes – leading to a healthy and hard penis.
Another benefit: several men have reported that both edging and ballooning, which entails stopping yourself from ejaculating with the kegel, have helped with their gains. On the down side, you’ll wan to avoid developing bad habits such traumatic masturbatory syndrome (TMS), which can cause severe sexual dysfunction.
What Happens After Ejaculation
Immediately after ejaculation, the body releases a cocktail of chemicals that influence the body and the mind. The most important of these chemicals are norepinephrine, serotonin (also knows as “the pleasure hormone”), oxytocin, vasopressin, nitric oxide (NO), and the hormone prolactin.
Prolactin gives the feeling of sexual satisfaction in order to speed up the production of new sperm cells. It also induces sleep, which is why you often find yourself snoring shortly after sex.
Testosterone is the hormone which make men look and behave like men. It’s responsible, among other things, for facial hair, competitive spirit and muscular and penile development. So you can see why testosterone is the most important substance in our body when it comes to penis enlargement.
Arnold Schwarzenegger believed that masturbation or sex before working out helped him to relax and increased his vasodilatation, and thus his training output.
When to Ejaculate
A lot of penile exercisers believe that not ejaculating two hours before or after a workout maximizes gains. The argument for this belief is that you want your penis to be relaxed, full of blood, and larger than normal after a penile exercising workout. And you’ve probably noticed that the penis often contracts, shrinks, and reduces in blood flow after ejaculation.
Nevertheless, several men have gained inches regardless of when they ejaculated, had sex, or masturbated.
Right before ejaculation the penis is at it’s maximum size. The glans are enlarged. The shaft is enlarged. The tunica and smooth muscle are pushed at their limit.
So if you go into a Uli, clamping, or some other erect exercise, you’re already at your normal limit and ahead of the “penis enlargement” game (as a heads up, you’ll want to avoid these exercises for several months until you are an “advanced” exerciser).
Could abstinence maximize penis enlargement gains?
Most likely not. Here’s why: A study was done on 28 men, who were instructed not to ejaculate for entire week in order to observe the effects of abstinence in testosterone levels.
For the first 6 days, testosterone levels did not change. However, on the 7th day of abstaining, it jumped up by nearly 50%. The day after that, testosterone levels declined quickly.
Don’t Ejaculate too Much when looking for Penis Enlargement
Of course, you don’t want to go to the opposite extreme: ejaculating too much. Excessive masturbation and sex can lead to soreness in the tissue which makes the penis exercises uncomfortable and facilitates overtraining. Everything in excess can become damaging, but you already knew that.
In the end, you’ll have to find out what works for you. Many men have found their perfect combination by testing new things.
One such example is a community moderator of our penis forum, PESG, who masturbated every third day. Another example is member Big Girtha, who didn’t ejaculate on girth days but ejaculated and had sex many times every other day. Several other members just ejaculated whenever they felt the urge. The good news? All of these men gained a bigger penis, regardless of their ejaculations.
